Taking their name from the mountainous region of north-western Mexico, the group Son de Madera specializes in son jarocho, a musical style that traces back about 400 years to the eclectic cultural influences and traditions of coastal Veracruz (the Free and Sovereign State of Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llav).

Their string-driven music is lyrical and lively, featuring traditional instruments like the jarana and guitarra de son along with galvanizing dance and vocals – but their authentic sound incorporates modern elements as well.

The result is a unique cultural and musical experience: celebratory, dynamic and enchanting. At the forefront of the son jarocho revival, bursting with creativity and virtuosity, the group is the proud recipient of the prestigious ‘Premio Luna’ (Mexico’s Luna Award) for Best Traditional Group.

SUSANNAH ADAMS TRIO

A great night for dining and enjoying the wonderful vocal talents of Susannah Adams.

A bold innovator, Adams is unafraid to explore the depth of jazz in order to find her true sound - a sound which is at once warm and lush, yet harkens back to the era of cool jazz. A classic approach with a contemporary twist, Adams' unique style is utterly compelling.

Dr. Patrick Boyle, Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Victoria, BC says, “She is a consummate professional, constantly honing her craft. More than most singers, Susannah spends a great deal of time cultivating her original voice as an improviser.”

With the release of her debut album As the Morning Light, Adams has established herself as an original lyricist, composer and arranger, as well as an interpreter of jazz standards.

Born and raised in London, England, Adams now resides by the ocean in Victoria, British Columbia, with her husband and two children. She believes the world is a stage and is often found singing to the ducks as she tends to their urban farm.

OCIE ELLIOTT

Ocie Elliott is musical duo Jon Middleton and Sierra Lundy from Victoria, B.C., Canada. The two met playing music at a festival on the small, wind-swept Salt Spring Island, where their love of music and the chemistry of their voices fostered an instant connection. Jon and Sierra’s voices meld beautifully in a cascade of sound, described by one reviewer as “...the aural equivalent of indigo painted skies and the first summer stars."

Their unique blend of contemporary and indie folk music is influenced by artists such as Gillian Welch, Simon & Garfunkel and Angus and Julia Stone , and born of the natural landscape of Canada’s wild west coast.

In late October 2017, they released their first EP to the world, recorded in the woods of Vancouver Island, and immediately attracted an international following. Since then, they’ve opened for the likes of Mason Jennings, Joshua Hyslop and Current Swell, and plan to release another EP soon.

LONELY HEARTSTRING BAND

LONELY HEARTSTRING BAND

An evening of highly acclaimed Bluegrass!

Nourished by deep roots in the expansive canon of traditional American music, The Lonely Heartstring Band embodies the modern American condition—an understanding and reverence for the past that informs a push into the future. George Clements (guitar, vocals) Patrick M'Gonigle (fiddle, vocals) Charles Clements (bass, vocals) Matt Witler (mandolin) and Gabe Hirshfeld (banjo) bring together their own musical styles to create a sound greater than the sum of its parts.

"These are musicians of dynamic imagination and massive musical talent. However, the music on their album feels as comfortable as a pair of long-worn leather slippers. A fascinating debut." - Tom Clarke, Elmore Magazine

"With George Clement’s soothing vocals leading the way, The Lonely Heartstring Band achieves one of the highest callings of music’s true purpose.” - Gregory Victor, Parcbench

"Original, effusive songs compose the bulk of the album, words bursting forth in staccatos of whimsy and rhyme." - Donald Teplyske, Lonesome Road Review

"We won’t know until December if The Lonely Heartstring Band will get a GRAMMY nomination for its engaging 2016 Rounder Records debut album, Deep Waters. But this fast-rising young quintet is the most notable bluegrass band to come out of Berklee well, maybe ever.” - George Varga, San Diego Union Tribune

"Masterful musicians that have carefully crafted a unique brand of bluegrass.” - Good Times

"One of the most talked-about young groups on the modern bluegrass scene.” - Vineyard Gazette

Live music from 9:00pm.

HUSH HUSH NOISE & WIRED TO THE SKY
Jun

9:00 PM21:00

HUSH HUSH NOISE & WIRED TO THE SKY

Hush Hush Noise is an experimental pop band from Victoria BC, who combine organic sounds with electronics to create memorable songs. “An ever changing creation of sound that wavers between the pit of your worst fears and the euphoria of love at its peak."

Who is in the band?:
Lily Fawn- Lily has an unconventional songwriting style that’s like storytelling set to music. She sings both through her voice and her musical saw, a most serene and enchanting sound. She also emboldens Hush Hush Noise’s rhythmic assault with drums of all variety.
Pop montreal says, “Lily fills the stage with charm to burn".

Eric Hogg - Eric has been recording, playing guitar and writing songs since age 10. His experience making noise and electronic music has left an indelible impact on his approach to pop music.

Wired To The Sky (solo)
Wired To The Sky is the ever-evolving solo project of Canadian artist, Dylan Perkons. While relocating from Montreal to the West Coast after the dissolution of his orchestral-folk project, Mind That Bird, he began writing and performing new material, frequently collaborating with a rotating cast of Vancouver Island musicians. In late 2016 Perkons and his band entered the studio to record their debut album as Wired To The Sky, produced by Juno Award-winner Colin Stewart (Dan Mangan, Black Mountain, Yukon Blonde). The 2017 release, titled Steady Sparrow, Steady Flight finds Perkons' residing comfortably in a post-Americana landscape. Though his dusty baritone remains at the front and center of the album, the dynamic arrangements carry the listener through the songs. Swaying between colorful indie folk and eerie country-noir, the music compliments the earnest writing woven throughout the songs. Wired To The Sky is currently working on a follow-up release produced by Evening Hymns’ Jonas Bonnetta. The as of yet untitled effort is slated for a late 2018 release.

CANOE STANDERS
Jun
2
9:00 PM21:00

CANOE STANDERS

We are three men, bold enough to stand in canoes... and that's how we like our music: filled with risk taking and laughter. Lovers of all musics, rooted in jazz, we bring our varied backgrounds to whatever we play. An old country waltz with an Afro-Cuban groove, some Tom Waits disco, a Beatles polka? [It's happened before, it could happen again...] Put your life jackets on for some extremely connected, high energy fun, with intermittent periods of transcendental beauty.

Brooke Maxwell - (piano and vocals)
The co-creator of the international hit musical and off-broardway success, Ride the Cyclone (Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, MCC Theatre NY), Brooke is a freelance musician and educator.

Peter Dowse - (bass)
‪A journeyman studio musician from Montreal and eventually in New York, recording and producing records.‬ Especially memorable times were working with drummers Omar Hakim (Weather Report), Yogi Horton (Ashford & Simpson), and Paco Sery (Joe Zawinul Syndicate) as well as working in Puerto Rico, sharing the stage with Celia Cruz and bassist Sal Cuevas.

Kelby MacNayr - (drums and vocals)
From to his role as teacher/ performer at Jazz Port Townsend Festival (WA, USA) and the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival (ID, USA), to special workshops for the BC Music Teachers Association and workshops for young performers, MacNayr brings a vitality and passion that attests to his belief that music is a powerful force for joy and creativity.
