ART OPENING: DONOVAN ROSE 'POOR AND CLEAN'

As we say farewell to the fabulous exhibition from Andrea Soos, we simultaneously welcome Donovan Rose and his fabulous collection: Poor and Clean.

MEET THE ARTIST: 5pm til 7pm

About the artist (In Donovans words...)

I was born in Sorrento, B.C. and delivered by wild moles. I am the youngest of seven billy goats, my father was a flapjack and my mother a wool hat. My education began immediately as my mother taught me how to catch ptarmigan and sew silken scarves out of their leg skin in the colder months. After years of training, I moved to Montreal where I hoped to make my fortune trading stolen sandwiches. With a surprise drop in the market, I took on visual art and dug into portraiture after visiting an Otto Dix exhibition which inspired three large full figure paintings.

Needless to say, my scarf weaving days were behind me, after leaving Montreal I travelled to Paris, Barcelona and Madrid to study under the sharp eyes of up and coming artists: Van Dongen, Matisse and Picasso. I returned to Canada and found myself stuck in the dark corners of a bathroom renovations catalog , so I moved to Vancouver Island in 2013 for a return to painting, after escaping the walrus den of central Alberta. I am now currently living in the Cowichan Valley where my partner and I run The Ou Gallery and artist residency. I have my studio here and I am currently working on a series of questionable figure studies while moonlighting as a bullfighter and afternooning as prize winning salsa taster.

EXHIBITION runs from August 28th til mid October

Join us for a great night for dining and enjoying the wonderful vocal talents of Susannah Adams.

Joined by Tony Genge (piano) and John Lee (bass).

A bold innovator, Adams is unafraid to explore the depth of jazz in order to find her true sound - a sound which is at once warm and lush, yet harkens back to the era of cool jazz. A classic approach with a contemporary twist, Adams' unique style is utterly compelling.

With the release of her debut album As the Morning Light, Adams has established herself as an original lyricist, composer and arranger, as well as an interpreter of jazz standards.

SON DE MADERA

Taking their name from the mountainous region of north-western Mexico, the group Son de Madera specializes in son jarocho, a musical style that traces back about 400 years to the eclectic cultural influences and traditions of coastal Veracruz (the Free and Sovereign State of Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llav).

Their string-driven music is lyrical and lively, featuring traditional instruments like the jarana and guitarra de son along with galvanizing dance and vocals – but their authentic sound incorporates modern elements as well.

The result is a unique cultural and musical experience: celebratory, dynamic and enchanting. At the forefront of the son jarocho revival, bursting with creativity and virtuosity, the group is the proud recipient of the prestigious ‘Premio Luna’ (Mexico’s Luna Award) for Best Traditional Group.
